Synopsis

Christo Roppolo claims to have been videotaping and communicating with UFOs around Monterey, CA for several years. He contacted filmmaker, Justin Gaar, in 2013 to begin creating a film about his sightings. Skeptical of the footage but intrigued by Christo's eccentricities and wild stories, Justin begins spending time with Christo hunting UFOs along California's beautiful central coast. When a crop circle appears in Monterey County and becomes international news, Christo is validated in his belief of alien contact and Justin, shocked, begins investigating the source of the crop circle and how Christo knows beyond a doubt that he's being contacted by his "brother's from space."

Category Breakdown

LGBTQ+ Representation

Fair

The film lacks explicit LGBTQ+ characters or narratives. The focus remains on the interpersonal relationship between the filmmaker and his subject without addressing non-cisnormative identities.

Gender Representation

Fair

The narrative centers on a male-dominated dynamic between Christo Roppolo and Justin Gaar. There is no evidence of female agency or the subversion of traditional gender hierarchies.

Racial & Ethnic Diversity

Limited

The story follows a conventional biographical structure set in Monterey. It lacks evidence of non-white casting or the use of diverse ethnic perspectives within the narrative.

Religious & Cultural Diversity

Good

The film explores alternative spirituality by centering a worldview that challenges scientific consensus. This approach decenters traditional religious and secular-rationalist paradigms through the lens of alien contact.

Disability Representation

Fair

The subject's eccentricities may touch upon neurodivergent perspectives. However, it is unclear if these traits are treated with agency or used simply as plot devices.

Strengths

  • Promotes pluralistic understandings of reality by centering non-traditional spiritualities.
  • Challenges mainstream scientific skepticism and institutional frameworks through a subjective lens.

Areas for Improvement

  • Lacks intersectional breadth, specifically regarding racial and ethnic diversity.
  • The narrative remains heavily focused on a singular, male-centric experience.
  • Provides little to no visible representation of LGBTQ+ identities.

AI Analysis

The documentary functions as a character study of an individual operating outside conventional social and scientific norms. It succeeds in validating unconventional worldviews and alternative ways of knowing, which provides a degree of cultural pluralism. However, the film lacks intersectional breadth. The narrative is heavily centered on a male-centric experience and lacks visible representation of diverse racial, ethnic, or LGBTQ+ identities. Ultimately, while the film avoids traditional institutional authority, it does not demonstrate the intentional demographic diversity necessary for a higher progressive rating.
