Malarazza: una storia di periferia offers a gritty, nuanced critique of traditional power structures. By centering the narrative on a woman's psychological endurance and utilizing a queer character as a source of stability, the film challenges the hyper-masculine norms of the Sicilian underworld. The film effectively subverts the cliché of the powerful Mafia boss, instead presenting traditional masculinity as a source of systemic dysfunction and domestic terror. This shift moves the story from a standard crime drama to a sophisticated study of social decay. While the film excels in its deconstruction of gender and cultural hierarchies, it remains strictly tied to its specific regional and ethnic context. This focus provides authenticity to the Sicilian setting but offers limited racial breadth.

The story centers on Rosaria’s survival and her significant role in driving the narrative within a violent patriarchal structure. It challenges the typical male lead by portraying him as a dysfunctional, unstable figure rather than an authoritative leader.
Set in Catania, the film reflects the specific ethnic and regional reality of its Sicilian setting. It focuses on local social stratification rather than presenting a multi-ethnic cast.
The narrative critiques traditional institutional hierarchies by framing the Mafia as a source of social decay. It also deconstructs the nuclear family ideal, presenting it as a site of fear.
