All My Life is a somber deconstruction of social belonging that moves away from traditional romantic clichés. By anchoring the story in the historical context of the 2001 Queen Boat arrests, the film transforms a personal drama into a systemic critique of how institutionalized norms impact queer lives. The film succeeds by refusing a sanitized resolution, instead showing how state-sanctioned social structures can dismantle an individual's life. It provides a vital, non-Western perspective on identity politics and the friction between personal autonomy and the state.
Category Breakdown
The film centers on the complexities of gay identity in Egypt, giving the protagonist a significant role in driving the story. It explores the tension between personal intimacy and state intervention, criticizing legal frameworks that assume everyone is straight or cisgender.
Gender is shown through the protagonist's navigation of traditional social hierarchies. While it offers a nuanced look at masculinity, the limited visibility of women's ability to drive the story prevents a higher score.
The film maintains cultural authenticity with a primarily Egyptian cast and setting. It avoids Western-centric perspectives by grounding the drama in specific Middle Eastern socio-political realities.
The narrative functions as a critique of institutional power and traditional social order. It prioritizes individual subjective truth over the moralizing dictates of state or religious institutions.
There is no significant evidence regarding the inclusion of characters with visible or invisible disabilities within the narrative.
