Khalid: Free Spirit succeeds as a platform for Black creative expression. By centering a Black artist's personal history and artistry, the film disrupts traditional Western pop-star narratives through a specific cultural lens. However, the film's impact on other diversity metrics is limited. The narrative appears focused on the protagonist's individual growth, leaving little room for exploring gender hierarchies or LGBTQ+ identities. Ultimately, the work is a deeply personal companion piece to an album. Its strength lies in its raw, culturally specific storytelling rather than broad social commentary.
