The O'Briens is a localized domestic drama that prioritizes ethnic and familial cohesion over complex identity issues. It operates within the conventional clichés of the family genre, focusing on the dissolution and reunification of a specific Irish lineage. By centering on a homogeneous group in a specific geographic context, the film misses opportunities to engage with broader social or identity-based diversity. Ultimately, the film serves as a traditional character study rather than a progressive exploration of identity.
