New Showbiz Analysis

Stephen Dwoskin’s work reinterprets the classic Beauty and the Beast story to explore the idea of 'Otherness.' By focusing on a monstrous male figure, the film shifts attention from romanticized clichés to confrontations with the abject. The film excels in deconstructing traditional gender roles by giving significant psychological depth to its female characters. It allows them to actively engage with the unfolding events rather than passively observe. However, the use of monstrosity as a theme remains unclear. While it hints at social alienation and difference, the lack of concrete details makes it hard to discern if specific identities are being represented or if they are just used as metaphors.

Official Synopsis

'The Sun and the Moon, a film fairy tale, is about two women’s terrifying encounter with ‘Otherness’ in the form of a man, abject and monstrous, and for them to either to witness, accept or partake in his annihilation. All are caught in their own isolation and are fearful of the menace that has to be met. The film, as a personal interpretation of Beauty and the Beast, enciphers concerns, beliefs and desires in seductive images that are themselves a form of camouflage, making it possible to utter harsh truths.'
