From Beneath operates strictly within the established boundaries of the body horror and survival thriller genres. The narrative focuses on individual survival and the biological degradation of a central character, prioritizing visceral tension over social commentary. The film relies on conventional archetypes, featuring a heterosexual duo in a rural setting. It lacks the narrative complexity needed to disrupt social hierarchies or offer multi-layered character studies. Ultimately, the work functions as a traditional genre piece. It emphasizes the fear of losing a loved one through physical transformation rather than exploring diverse cultural or identity-based perspectives.
Category Breakdown
The story focuses on a heterosexual couple, Jason and Sam. There are no characters with non-straight or non-cisgender identities, and the film does not challenge the idea that everyone is straight or cisgender.
The plot revolves around a male protagonist's transformation and his female partner's reaction. These roles follow typical genre archetypes without challenging traditional power dynamics.
The characters live in a secluded, rural setting. The narrative suggests a conventional, homogeneous cast without indications of diverse representation or non-Anglo-Saxon backgrounds.
Set in a traditional Western farmhouse, the film explores universal themes of loss. It lacks a critique of Western institutions or organized religion.
A biological transformation serves as a body horror device. This functions as a source of terror rather than a nuanced exploration of lived experience or personal empowerment.

Official Synopsis
Jason and Sam travel to visit Sam's sister at her secluded farmhouse. While waiting for them to appear, Jason is bit by a strange organism in a pond. The bite begins a transformation in Jason, and now the couple must race against time to figure out what happened to Sam's sister and her family, and what lies in store for them. All of these elements are tantamount to the ultimate fear addressed in the film, the fear of losing a loved one and worse, becoming a monster in their eyes.
