The documentary excels in subverting traditional gender roles, focusing on a woman who reclaimed her own desires and independence. By highlighting Lafont’s defiance of social norms, the film honors an iconoclastic spirit. However, the film remains confined to a European artistic movement, limiting its broader appeal due to a lack of racial or ethnic diversity. Despite this, the film’s strength lies in its progressive dismantling of power dynamics, even if it does not explicitly address specific LGBTQ+ identities or disability.
Category Breakdown
The film examines the breaking down of traditional sexual taboos and constraints. It doesn't focus on specific LGBTQ+ identities but instead sets the stage for modern non-traditional relationships.
This documentary is a deep exploration of gender roles, presenting Lafont as an active agent of her own desires rather than a passive object. It celebrates a model of femininity that challenges traditional patriarchal structures.
The film is set in the cultural context of the French New Wave and the Cevennes region. It lacks significant racial or ethnic diversity and does not feature actors from diverse backgrounds.
The narrative emphasizes personal freedom and unconventional lifestyles. It promotes a form of secular, individualistic freedom that questions rigid social and moral structures, favoring personal authenticity.
There is no significant evidence suggesting that disability or neurodivergence plays a central role in this biographical study.

Official Synopsis
A journey in the company of Bernadette Lafont, French Cinema’s most atypical actress. Tracing her career from pin-up girl, to New Wave model of sexual freedom, to drug-dealing granny in the film Paulette, by way of La Fiancée du Pirate and Les Stances à Sophie, this film pays tribute to her extraordinary life and artistic odyssey. Her grand-daughters, Anna, Juliette and Solène, revisit the dreams of Bernadette, in the family home in the Cevennes region where they, like her, grew up. Her close friends, Bulle Ogier and Jean-Pierre Kalfon, reminisce on their artistic and human complicity. Throughout the film, Bernadette Lafont in person, with her inimitable character actress voice, re-evokes a life in cinema marked with insolence, courage and freedom.
