New Showbiz Analysis

Instinct is a sophisticated psychological drama that succeeds by prioritizing complex female subjectivity over traditional moral frameworks. It effectively dismantles gendered power dynamics, presenting a protagonist driven by intellect and obsession rather than passivity. However, the film's impact is limited by a lack of overt visibility regarding non-assuming gender matches what was assigned at birth or queer identities. The narrative remains largely centered on a localized, relatively homogeneous social landscape. Ultimately, the film offers a nuanced experience through its postmodern critique of authority and its embrace of moral ambiguity, even if it misses opportunities for broader characters who reflect more than one aspect of diversity.

Fair

The film centers on a psychological entanglement that assumes everyone is straight or cisgender. It uses a progressive perspective to explore female desire but does not show many LGBTQ+ identities or relationships.

How does Instinct portray gender?

Excellent

The narrative challenges traditional hierarchies by giving the female protagonist a significant role in driving the story. It explores female desire as a disruptive force, breaking away from expectations of feminine submissiveness.

How racially and ethnically diverse is Instinct?

Fair

Set in a contemporary Dutch context, the film lacks prominent blending of different racial backgrounds. It avoids overt stereotypes but does not use diverse casting to disrupt homogeneous social norms.

How does Instinct represent religion and culture?

Good

The story employs moral relativism, prioritizing individual trauma over institutional or religious morality. It presents ethically ambiguous actions through a lens of psychological necessity rather than condemnation.
