Chouf is a gritty, culturally specific drama that centers North African and Mediterranean identities in a French urban context. It challenges the typical Eurocentric perspective in crime dramas by highlighting the lived experiences of immigrant communities. However, the film's narrative is dominated by hyper-masculine dynamics and fraternal bonds, leaving little room for female or LGBTQ+ representation. While it successfully portrays systemic issues, its narrow focus on male-driven violence limits its broader social scope.
