Extinction operates as a typical survival thriller. The narrative emphasizes the immediate physical danger from prehistoric predators rather than exploring complex sociological themes or diverse identities. The film leans heavily on conventional adventure clichés. Women hold key scientific roles, but the overall narrative does not challenge traditional gender hierarchies or explore characters who reflect more than one aspect of diversity.
