Diversity & Representation

Overall Score

4.1/10

Fair

Category Breakdown

LGBTQ+ Representation

Minimal

The film lacks any indication of non-cisnormative identities or queer-coded character arcs. There is no evidence of same-sex intimacy within the narrative.

Gender Representation

Fair

Karla is presented as a high-agency protagonist with intellectual authority. However, the film's portrayal of male characters and potential subversion of traditional hierarchies remains unclear.

Racial & Ethnic Diversity

Minimal

The narrative does not explicitly highlight diverse casting or non-Anglo-Saxon ensembles. Specific details regarding the racial or ethnic backgrounds of the cast are unconfirmed.

Religious & Cultural Diversity

Fair

The story focuses on scientific inquiry and medical ethics rather than religious intervention. This suggests a narrative framework centered on secularist themes and biological struggle.

Disability Representation

Fair

The plot centers on a character suffering from Fatal Familial Insomnia. While this offers a look at chronic illness, it is uncertain if the condition serves as a plot device.

Strengths

  • Karla serves as a strong, high-agency female lead in a position of intellectual authority.
  • The central focus on Fatal Familial Insomnia provides a rare look at a devastating neurological condition.

Areas for Improvement

  • The film lacks visible LGBTQ+ representation or queer-coded character arcs.
  • There is no explicit evidence of racial or ethnic diversity within the ensemble.
  • The narrative lacks broader intersectional complexity beyond the central medical conflict.

AI Analysis

Awoken focuses its narrative energy on a high-stakes medical mystery driven by a female protagonist. Karla’s role as a medical student provides a strong foundation for gender agency, though the broader social landscape remains undefined. The film's primary diversity strength lies in its depiction of a rare neurological condition. This provides a platform for exploring the realities of terminal illness, even if the character's agency within that struggle is not fully established. However, the film lacks intersectional depth. There is no visible representation of LGBTQ+ identities or explicit racial diversity, leaving the narrative feeling narrow in its demographic scope.
