Commander Ekaterina Golovkina provides a strong depiction of female leadership and institutional agency. The crew maintains a balanced gender ratio throughout the mission.

Racial & Ethnic Diversity

  • Female leadership is emphasized through the character of the ISS Commander.
  • The crew maintains a balanced gender ratio during the mission.

AI Analysis

Life succeeds in presenting a globalized scientific environment through its international casting. By including various nationalities, the film avoids the trope of a homogeneous Western crew, making the setting feel authentic to modern space exploration. The film also subverts traditional gender hierarchies by placing a woman in command of the ISS. This provides a nuanced look at female authority in high-stakes, professional settings. However, the film remains tethered to traditional genre tropes. It lacks identity-driven narratives, queer representation, or any meaningful critique of systemic power, resulting in a functional rather than transformative approach to diversity.
