Limited

The narrative lacks explicit evidence of LGBTQ+ characters or non-cisnormative identities. The plot centers on the protagonist's grief and his interactions with the hotel staff.

Gender Representation

Fair

Female characters like Fiona and the protagonist's mother act as pivotal plot drivers. However, the hotel staff remains largely male-dominated, maintaining some traditional social structures.

Racial & Ethnic Diversity

Fair

As an Irish and UAE co-production, there is potential for cross-cultural intersectionality. Currently, the cast appears centered on Western archetypes within a rural Irish setting.

Religious & Cultural Diversity

Good

The film uses folk horror to critique the traditional family unit. Local folklore regarding a witch and an underworld frames the narrative's descent into trauma.

Strengths

  • International co-production status offers potential for cross-cultural intersectionality.

Areas for Improvement

  • Lacks visible LGBTQ+ representation or non-cisnormative identities within the primary character arcs.
  • The hotel staff composition leans toward a traditional, male-dominated social structure.
  • The cast appears largely centered on Western archetypes without significant racial blending.

AI Analysis

Hokum is a character-driven psychological horror that prioritizes atmospheric tension over demographic breadth. It functions as a deconstruction of domesticity, using supernatural elements to challenge the perceived safety of family institutions. While the film lacks high-density representation for LGBTQ+ or racial identities, it finds depth in its subversion of traditional social structures. The narrative uses folk horror to explore personal history and trauma. The production's international status suggests a broader reach, yet the immediate story remains focused on a specific, localized Irish setting.
