First Sunday is a culturally specific narrative that excels in its authentic portrayal of Black communal life. By centering the story within an African American church, the film provides significant depth to its racial representation and social nuances. However, the film operates strictly within established social and institutional hierarchies. It relies heavily on traditional religious morality and conventional gender roles, which limits its multi-layered breadth. While the film succeeds as a community-focused piece, its adherence to straight-centered structures and traditional domesticity results in a lower score for progressive representation.
