Diversity & Representation

Overall Score

2.2/10

Category Breakdown

LGBTQ+ Representation

Minimal

The film lacks LGBTQ+ characters or narratives addressing non-cisnormative identities. The plot focuses on a singular protagonist and familial trauma, suggesting a conventional structure.

Gender Representation

Limited

While the story centers on female protagonists, their arcs are rooted in traditional tropes of trauma and victimization. There is no evidence of subverting gender hierarchies.

Racial & Ethnic Diversity

Minimal

The narrative suggests a homogeneous approach typical of low-budget independent horror from this era. There is no indication of a diverse or non-Anglo-Saxon majority cast.

Religious & Cultural Diversity

Limited

Themes revolve around personal guilt and hometown legacies rather than deconstructing Western institutions. The film does not engage with anti-capitalist or secularist critiques.

Disability Representation

Fair

Physical disfigurement serves as a central plot driver. However, the narrative risks using disability as a horror catalyst rather than granting the character independent agency.

Strengths

  • Provides female-centric visibility through its central protagonists.
  • Uses physical disfigurement to drive the core mystery and tension.

Areas for Improvement

  • Avoid using disability primarily as a plot device or horror catalyst.
  • Incorporate more diverse racial and ethnic casting to expand the narrative scope.
  • Move beyond traditional tropes of female victimization and trauma.
  • Introduce LGBTQ+ identities to provide more intersectional depth.

AI Analysis

Beneath operates within the narrow confines of traditional horror tropes, prioritizing psychological tension and individual guilt over social or intersectional depth. The film relies on established genre conventions that favor a standard trajectory of retribution. While the presence of female leads provides some visibility, the storytelling leans heavily on themes of victimization. The narrative architecture lacks the intentionality required to disrupt social hierarchies or offer progressive perspectives. Ultimately, the film functions as a character-driven thriller focused on personal trauma. It does not seek to engage with broader cultural, racial, or identity-based critiques, resulting in a very conventional viewing experience.
