Diversity & Representation

Overall Score

3.6/10

Category Breakdown

LGBTQ+ Representation

Limited

The film lacks evidence of non-cisnormative identities or narratives that critique heteronormativity. Character dynamics appear driven by physical peril rather than identity-based exploration.

Gender Representation

Fair

The ensemble cast follows standard survival horror tropes. It remains unclear if the film subverts traditional gender hierarchies or relies on reactive female roles.

Racial & Ethnic Diversity

Fair

The Indian setting provides a structural opportunity for diverse casting. However, there is no confirmation of a non-white majority cast or high agency for characters of color.

Religious & Cultural Diversity

Limited

While set in a non-Western location, the story follows a Western-style expeditionary model. The narrative focuses on man versus nature rather than cultural exploration.

Disability Representation

Minimal

There is no information available regarding the inclusion of characters with visible or invisible disabilities.

Strengths

  • The Indian setting offers a departure from typical Western domestic horror environments.
  • The choice of location provides a structural opportunity for diverse casting and cultural immersion.

Areas for Improvement

  • The narrative lacks evidence of intersectional character development or identity-based exploration.
  • The film follows a Western-style expeditionary model rather than engaging in meaningful cultural critique.
  • There is a lack of documented agency for marginalized identities within the ensemble.

AI Analysis

Centipede operates within the conventional frameworks of early 2000s survival horror. The film prioritizes visceral tension and immediate physical threats over complex social commentary or intersectional character development. While the choice of the Shankali Caverns in India offers a departure from Western domestic spaces, the narrative architecture remains rooted in traditional genre tropes. The setting provides a backdrop for conflict but does not necessarily translate into deep cultural immersion. Ultimately, the film lacks documented evidence of subverting social hierarchies or providing agency to marginalized identities, resulting in a conventional approach to storytelling.
