Separate Lives follows conventional 1990s psychological thriller clichés, focusing on established dynamics like a male protagonist dealing with a psychologically unstable female lead. The film treats mental health conditions as sources of mystery and tension rather than exploring them deeply. Ultimately, it adheres to the demographic and social norms of its time, lacking the intentionality to challenge traditional hierarchies or offer diverse perspectives.
Category Breakdown
The story revolves around a heterosexual relationship between Tom Beckwith and Lauren Porter. There are no characters with non-binary or transgender identities, nor does the film critique the assumption that everyone is straight.
Lauren Porter is portrayed as an intellectually authoritative professor. However, her storyline emphasizes her vulnerability, reinforcing a traditional dynamic where she needs protection from the male protagonist.
The narrative appears to follow a standard, homogeneous character distribution typical of 1990s American thrillers. There is no indication of a diverse cast or non-Anglo-Saxon majority.
The film examines psychological trauma through a secular, clinical perspective. It focuses on individual struggles without addressing broader societal or religious frameworks.
The plot centers on a character with Dissociative Identity Disorder. The narrative uses her mental health condition primarily as a device to create suspense and tension.

Official Synopsis
Tom Beckwith has just quit his job as a police officer in order to study psychology. But his professor, Lauren Porter, is more interested in his criminology abilities than in his progress in psychology. Because of traumatic circumstances during her childhood she is suffering from multiple personality disorder, and it looks like her other ego may have killed someone. So Tom tries to help her by observing her, combining his professional abilities as an ex-cop and his recently gained knowledge of psychology.
