New Showbiz Analysis

L.O.C.A. stands out as a character-driven film that goes beyond typical comedy clichés. By focusing on a support group, it delves into the complexities of female psychology and modern social roles. The narrative highlights the significant role of its female protagonists, especially through Manuela’s journalistic viewpoint. This approach turns personal struggles into a broader examination of contemporary female life. While the film excels in representing gender and mental health issues, it provides less detail about specific racial or LGBTQ+ identity markers. It remains a nuanced look at identity and interpersonal dynamics.

Official Synopsis

Manuela is journalist in her thirties who faces love and professional crises. In an unexpected incident, she gets to know Elena, who takes her to a support group for women who love too much or are excessively jealous: the League of those who are Obsessive-Compulsive for Affection (L.O.C.A., Brazilian slang for "crazy"). The therapist seems to be an extremely mature and structured psychologist. Manuela sees this group as a chance to write an incredible article about the current female roles and wishes.
