The film centers a female protagonist whose proactive actions drive the narrative. It shifts the setting from Europe to Morocco to introduce diverse cultural elements, avoiding a purely Western-centric perspective. However, it lacks explicit representation of LGBTQ+ identities and does not address physical or neurodivergent disabilities.
Category Breakdown
The film does not explicitly depict non-straight relationships or same-sex intimacy. The central plot focuses on a woman and a widower, emphasizing internal emotional states rather than overt LGBTQ+ identities.
Jasmijn is a strong, proactive protagonist who drives the story forward through her own psychological struggles and decisions. She travels to Morocco to seek resolution, showing ability to act and active engagement.
Moving the setting to Morocco offers a non-Western perspective, disrupting a traditional Western viewpoint by incorporating a North African landscape into the protagonist's journey.
The narrative uses travel to explore a different cultural lens, critiquing Western emotional stagnation through a new social context. This shift provides a critique of Western norms.
The film addresses psychological trauma and writer's block as forms of invisible disability, making mental health a central theme rather than a secondary element.
