The Next Trip is a contemplative drama that finds its strength in the nuanced portrayal of aging and autonomy. It successfully challenges institutional authority by centering the protagonists' right to define their own end-of-life journey through secular dignity. However, the film operates within a traditional demographic framework. The lack of racial diversity and the focus on a heterosexual partnership limit its broader reach. Ultimately, the film excels as a character study, trading grand spectacle for an intimate exploration of human connection and the complexities of mortality.
Category Breakdown
The film centers on a long-term heterosexual relationship. There is no explicit evidence of queer-coded subtext or non-cisgender identities within the narrative.
The story avoids traditional caregiver hierarchies by emphasizing a woman's role in driving the story. Jacqueline maintains intellectual and emotional parity with Richard throughout their shared history.
The cast appears to reflect a homogeneous demographic. There is no evidence of blending different racial backgrounds or diverse casting to disrupt social hierarchies.
The narrative prioritizes individual autonomy and secular values over religious dictates. It frames the end-of-life journey as a personal pilgrimage rather than a spiritual one.
Chronic illness is treated with dignity rather than pity. The film focuses on the lived experience of terminal illness without resorting to inspiration porn.

Official Synopsis
Jacqueline and Richard, a couple in their eighties, return to the hotel where they spent their first night of love sixty-five years ago. In that same room, they rediscover memories of the past as they retrace their shared love life. Little by little, we understand the true purpose of this pilgrimage. Faced with the disease that relentlessly gains ground, they have decided not to leave each other and to leave together, with dignity.
