Synopsis

A group of 7 youngsters decide to spend a night at a reportedly haunted hotel to celebrate the farewell of one of them leaving for the USA. Despite people's warnings and other "signs" trying to ward them off from there, they enter the hotel, and then the truth dawns on them. Seven friends - Sam alias Samrat, Magesh, Achint, Neel, Neena, Sonia and Magi reunite after several years apart to celebrate the farewell of one of their friends, who is going abroad in order to pursue his career and fulfill his goals. The group soon learns about an abandoned hotel with strange stories around it. Much against warnings, they decide to spend a night at the hotel, and soon realize the mistake of their lives.

Diversity & Representation

Overall Score

2.9/10

Limited

Category Breakdown

LGBTQ+ Representation

Limited

The narrative focuses on a traditional group of seven friends. There is no evidence of queer romantic arcs or non-cisnormative identities.

Gender Representation

Fair

The ensemble includes both male and female characters. However, female characters often serve as reactive figures to supernatural threats rather than drivers of plot agency.

Racial & Ethnic Diversity

Fair

The film features an Indian cast and setting. While providing ethnic specificity, the story follows a conventional trope without exploring complex intersectional identities.

Religious & Cultural Diversity

Limited

The plot relies on a traditional framework of respecting warnings and superstition. It lacks any significant critique of Western institutions or secularist themes.

Disability Representation

Minimal

The characters are presented as a standard able-bodied ensemble. There is no mention of neurodivergence or chronic health conditions.

Strengths

  • Provides ethnic specificity through an Indian cast and setting.

Areas for Improvement

  • Lacks representation of LGBTQ+ identities or queer romantic arcs.
  • Female characters appear more reactive to threats than proactive drivers of the plot.
  • Does not include characters with visible or invisible disabilities.
  • Fails to explore complex intersectional identities or deconstruct social hierarchies.

AI Analysis

Horror Story operates as a conventional genre piece that prioritizes standard horror tropes over social commentary. The character dynamics follow traditional social structures, offering little in the way of progressive representation or narrative subversion. While the film provides ethnic specificity through its Indian setting and cast, it does not use this backdrop to challenge power dynamics or explore intersectional identities. The ensemble functions primarily to fulfill the requirements of a haunted house narrative. Ultimately, the film lacks the intentional architecture needed to disrupt social hierarchies. It remains a functional genre exercise where representation serves the plot rather than providing complex character studies.
