Rust is a gritty realist drama that emphasizes social critique over diverse representation. The narrative centers on the breakdown of trust between children and the adult institutions meant to protect them. While the film explores themes of ability to act through its young protagonists, it lacks specific markers for LGBTQ+ or disability representation. The focus on gendered violence is central to the plot but follows established dramatic clichés. Ultimately, the film serves as a study of systemic skepticism rather than a showcase for diverse identities.
