Coming In is a character-driven exploration of identity fluidity that challenges the assumption that everyone is straight or cisgender. By centering a queer protagonist whose journey involves navigating both same-sex and opposite-sex attractions, the film deconstructs established romantic identities. The narrative structure is progressive for its time, portraying non-traditional relationship structures and the psychological chaos of shifting desires. It goes beyond simple formulas to examine the complexities of individual identity. However, the film's impact is somewhat tempered by its pivot toward a heterosexual romantic arc. This creates a tension between queer visibility and traditional romantic storytelling patterns.
