Synopsis

From America's greatest beardsman, to Morgan Spurlock's own mustache, Executive Producers Will Arnett, Jason Bateman, and Ben Silverman bring us a hilarious look at men's identity in the 21st century. Models, actors, experts and comedians weigh in on what it is to be a man in a world where the definition of masculinity has become as diverse as a hipster's facial hair in Williamsburg. The hilarious follicles of men's idiosyncratic grooming habits are thoroughly combed over as men finally take a long hard look in the mirror.

Category Breakdown

LGBTQ+ Representation

Fair

The film focuses primarily on cisgender male grooming habits rather than centering queer-coded narratives. While it explores diverse masculinity, it does not actively prioritize specific LGBTQ+ identities.

Gender Representation

Good

The documentary deconstructs rigid hierarchies of traditional manhood by treating masculinity as a performative, evolving concept. It avoids singular, stoic ideals in favor of a more nuanced, multifaceted portrayal.

Racial & Ethnic Diversity

Good

By including subjects from South Korea and the UK, the film avoids a purely Anglo-centric perspective. This international casting frames masculinity as a global phenomenon rather than a localized one.

Religious & Cultural Diversity

Fair

The film offers a subtle critique of how capitalist marketing manufactures social pressures regarding identity. It maintains a secular, observational approach to the cultural habits of the grooming industry.

Disability Representation

Limited

There is no meaningful or central representation for individuals with visible or invisible disabilities. The narrative remains strictly focused on the aesthetic aspects of grooming within the general population.

Strengths

  • Effectively deconstructs rigid, traditional hierarchies of masculinity through a performative lens.
  • Provides a globalized perspective by including diverse subjects from South Korea and the UK.
  • Offers a thoughtful critique of how capitalist marketing influences modern identity and grooming habits.

Areas for Improvement

  • Lacks meaningful or central representation for individuals with visible or invisible disabilities.
  • Does not actively prioritize or center specific LGBTQ+ or non-cisnormative narratives.
  • Focus remains largely on cisgender male grooming rather than deep intersectional identities.

AI Analysis

Mansome offers a mid-range exploration of identity that succeeds in disrupting traditional gender tropes. It moves beyond static definitions of manhood to examine how modern masculinity is constructed through consumerism and aesthetics. The documentary achieves a globalized perspective by incorporating international subjects, which prevents the film from feeling purely Western-centric. This provides a broader view of how grooming standards function across different cultures. However, the film lacks deep intersectional engagement. It fails to provide significant representation for the disability community and does not center LGBTQ+ narratives as a primary structural driver.
