The film functions as a character-driven exploration of obsession, with its most forward-thinking element being the casting of a Black woman as a powerful catalyst. By placing a Black woman at the center of the plot, it diverges from the homogeneous casting prevalent in its time. However, the narrative leans heavily on the 'femme fatale' cliché, which confines the story's complexity to individual impulses rather than broader societal critiques. Ultimately, while the film challenges traditional norms, it remains rooted in conventional romantic conflicts and straight-centered structures.
