Hank marries the divorced Joan, who's the mother of teens Sebastian and Jessica. After living with his new family for years, Hank announces that he's getting a sex change operation. The family deserts Hank, with Jessica going her own way and Sebastian staying with his mom. But Joan becomes an alcoholic, so Sebastian moves back in with Hank — now Henrietta — who turns out to be far more supportive than anyone else.

Category Breakdown
LGBTQ+ Representation
The film centers on a father transitioning from Hank to Henrietta, making gender identity the core driver of the plot. It also explores adolescent sexual identity through a lens of fluidity rather than fixed traits.
Gender Representation
The narrative deconstructs the 'stoic male' archetype by presenting a transitioning parent as a primary source of emotional support. This subverts traditional patriarchal roles and redefines domestic competence.
Racial & Ethnic Diversity
The story is set within a predominantly white, middle-class suburban framework. The primary cast lacks significant racial or ethnic breadth, remaining largely homogeneous throughout the film.
Religious & Cultural Diversity
The film prioritizes individual authenticity over traditional institutions, depicting the breakdown of the nuclear family. It suggests that conventional parental authority and stable homes are often fragile and insufficient.
Disability Representation
Mental health is touched upon through Joan’s alcoholism, though it serves primarily as a catalyst for familial instability. The film does not offer a deep exploration of lived experience with addiction.

AI Analysis
The film excels at dismantling heteronormative structures and traditional gender hierarchies. By centering a gender transition and exploring identity fluidity, it offers a sophisticated look at non-cisnormative experiences and emotional support systems. However, the narrative is limited by its lack of racial and ethnic diversity. The focus remains strictly within a homogeneous, middle-class suburban setting, which restricts the scope of its social commentary. Ultimately, the work is a character-driven study of identity that prioritizes personal truth over institutional stability, even if it uses certain struggles, like addiction, primarily as plot devices.
