Category Breakdown

LGBTQ+ Representation

Minimal

The film lacks LGBTQ+ characters or non-cisnormative identities. The interpersonal dynamics focus exclusively on professional cooperation and familial bonds within a survivalist framework.

Gender Representation

Good

Emma serves as a highly competent professional whose intellect and physical resilience are vital to the group. The film avoids domestic tropes by prioritizing a hierarchy based on specialized skill sets.

Racial & Ethnic Diversity

Good

The casting of Aaron Paaayah provides meaningful Māori representation within the South Pacific setting. The ensemble functions as a multinational assembly of specialists rather than a homogeneous Western group.

Religious & Cultural Diversity

Limited

The narrative focuses on the struggle against natural forces rather than social critiques. It does not engage with organized religion or the deconstruction of traditional Western structures.

Disability Representation

Minimal

There is no representation of visible or invisible disabilities. The story centers on the extreme physical capabilities required for cave diving without exploring neurodivergence or disability.

Strengths

  • The film disrupts gender hierarchies by centering Emma's technical expertise and survival agency.
  • Meaningful Māori representation is provided through the central casting of Aaron Paaayah.
  • The ensemble avoids homogeneity by presenting a multinational group of specialists.

Areas for Improvement

  • The narrative lacks any representation of LGBTQ+ identities or non-cisnormative characters.
  • There is no exploration of disability or neurodivergent perspectives within the crew.
  • The film avoids engaging with social, religious, or systemic critiques of Western institutions.

AI Analysis

Sanctum is a technical survival thriller that finds its progressive value through subverting gendered competence. By placing a woman in a position of high-stakes technical authority, the film moves beyond traditional secondary female roles. The inclusion of indigenous actors in central roles provides a more diverse landscape than typical Western-centric adventure films. This multinational assembly of specialists adds depth to the South Pacific setting. However, the film remains tethered to traditional narrative structures. It lacks the systemic critiques or identity-focused frameworks necessary to achieve a higher diversity score.
