Now & Later serves as a profound critique of geopolitical and socioeconomic structures. By using a documentary format, it prioritizes human dignity over state-mandated citizenship status. The film effectively shifts the perspective away from a Western-centric view to examine the lived realities of undocumented individuals. The narrative's strength lies in its ability to deconstruct the paradox of an economy that relies on undocumented labor while simultaneously excluding those workers through state mechanisms. This creates a powerful lens through which to view systemic racial and legal hierarchies. While the film is highly successful in its cultural and racial centering, it offers limited engagement with LGBTQ+ identities or disability representation. The focus remains firmly on the multi-layered vulnerabilities of the migrant experience and the critique of institutional authority.
